📝 Student Instruction: Present Continuous Tense

  1. When do we use Present Continuous?

    • To talk about actions happening right now.
    • To talk about temporary actions.
    • Example: I am reading a book now.
  1. Form
  • Affirmative (+): Subject + am/is/are + verb+ing

    • I am playing football.
    • She is cooking dinner.
    • They are studying English.
  • Negative (–): Subject + am/is/are + not + verb+ing

    • I am not playing football.
    • He is not (isn’t) sleeping.
    • We are not (aren’t) watching TV.
  • Question (?): Am/Is/Are + subject + verb+ing

    • Am I talking too fast?
    • Is she singing?
    • Are they playing outside?
  1. Spelling rules for -ing
  • Most verbs → add -ing

    • play → playing
  • Verb ending in -e → drop e + ing

    • write → writing
  • Short verb (CVC: consonant + vowel + consonant) → double last consonant + ing

    • run → running
