AIMS OF THE LESSON

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. identify the structure of an opinion essay;
  2. use appropriate expressions for expressing personal opinions in English;
  3. formulate arguments for and against a given topic;
  4. write a coherent and well-organized opinion essay;
  5. use linking words and appropriate vocabulary correctly;
  6. express and support their point of view clearly and logically;
  7. revise and edit a written text for grammatical and lexical accuracy.

 

Content Description

This lesson focuses on developing students’ writing skills through the production of an opinion essay in English. Students will learn the main characteristics of this type of writing: introducing the topic, clearly stating a personal opinion, supporting ideas with arguments and examples, and writing an effective conclusion.

The lesson includes:

  • the structure of an opinion essay;
  • useful expressions for giving opinions;
  • linking words and connectors (firstly, however, moreover, in conclusion, etc.);
  • argumentation techniques;
  • organizing ideas into coherent paragraphs;
  • drafting, revising, and editing an essay.

Suggested topics:

  • Should teenagers use smartphones at school?
  • Is online learning better than traditional learning?
  • Should school uniforms be compulsory?
