Cambridge IELTS 16 Listening Test 1

Listening - ESL

Each question in the Listening and Reading tests is worth one mark.

Questions which require letter / Roman numeral answers
For questions where the answers are letters or Roman numerals, you should write only the
number of answers required. For example, if the answer is a single letter or numeral, you
should write only one answer. If you have written more letters or numerals than are required,
the answer must be marked wrong.
Questions which require answers in the form of words or numbers
Answers may be written in upper or lower case.
Words in brackets are optional - they are correct, but not necessary.
Alternative answers are separated by a slash (/).
If you are asked to write an answer using a certain number of words and/or (a) number(s),
you will be penalised if you exceed this. For example, if a question specifies an answer
using NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS and the correct answer is 'black leather coat',
the answer 'coat of black leather' is incorrect.
In questions where you are expected to complete a gap, you should only transfer the
necessary missing word(s) onto the answer sheet. For example, to complete 'in the ...',
where the correct answer is 'morning', the answer 'in the morning' would be incorrect.
All answers require correct spelling (including words in brackets).
Both US and UK spelling are acceptable and are included in the answer key.
All standard alternatives for numbers, dates and currencies are acceptable.
All standard abbreviations are acceptable.

The Rabbit and the Turtle

Once upon a time, there was a rabbit. He was very proud of himself because he could run very fast. He often laughed at other animals because they walked slowly. One day, the rabbit met a turtle. The turtle walked very, very slowly.

"Hey, Turtle! You are so slow!" said the rabbit, laughing.

The turtle felt angry but he stayed calm. "Why don't we have a race, Rabbit? Let's see who is faster," said the turtle.

The rabbit laughed even harder. "You? Race with me? That's funny! But okay, let's race."

The race began. The rabbit ran very fast and left the turtle far behind. The rabbit thought, "The turtle is so slow. I have plenty of time. I can take a nap." So the rabbit slept under a big tree.

Meanwhile, the turtle kept walking. He did not stop. He walked slowly but step by step, he got closer to the finish line.

When the rabbit woke up, he ran as fast as he could. But it was too late. The turtle had already crossed the finish line. The turtle won the race.

The rabbit felt very ashamed. He said, "I'm sorry, Turtle. I laughed at you. Now I understand that being fast is not everything."

The turtle smiled and said, "It's okay, Rabbit. Slow and steady wins the race."

Moral value: Don't underestimate others. Keep trying and never give up.
