  • Goal: Measure the distance between two points (spots) and record the time taken for simulated motion.
  • Total Duration: 45 minutes (Set-up: 10 minutes, Experimentation: 25 minutes, Discussion: 10 minutes)
  • Procedure and Data Collection
    • Step 1. Formulate your hypothesis. Discuss with your group and come up with a question about the relationship between distance and displacement, displacement and velocity, and velocity and acceleration in your simulated motion scenario.
    • Step 2. Select your scenario. Choose one of the provided scenarios (e.g., a car moving from point A to B, a person walking or running).
    • Step 3. Measure Distance. Measure the distance between two places using Google Earth, considering the two methods:
        • Ruler - select the start and end point.
        • Add polygon - select start point, follow streets until end point is reached.
    • Step 4. Simulate Motion. Record the time taken for simulated motion using Google Maps.
    • Step 5. Record Data. Fill out the data sheet with the distance measured in two methods, time taken, and calculate:
      • velocity = d/t
      • displacement (if applicable): identify direction
    • Step 5. Calculate Acceleration. If your scenario involves a change in speed, calculate acceleration using the formula: a=Δv/ Δt
    • Step 6. Discuss Findings. As a group, discuss your results, reflect on your hypothesis, and answer questions on the data sheet regarding your findings.
