Lesson Learning Outcomes

By finishing the worksheet, you will be able to use past modals of deduction (must/can't/might have been) and past modals of regret (should/shouldn't have) accurately to talk about past events, relationships, and decisions.

This LLO is achieved through four competencies:

  1. Competence. You will make and use past modals of deduction and regret accurately in speech and writing, choosing the modal that best fits your degree of certainty.
  2. Conscience. You will reflect critically on how the language of certainty and regret shapes self-judgment, distinguishing honest reflection from excessive self-blame.
  3. Compassion. You will respond empathetically to the experiences of loss and regret voiced in the songs.
  4. Commitment. You will apply what you've learned about naming uncertainty and regret constructively to a real or hypothetical decision in your own lives, moving from reflection toward intention.
