correction
i put the answers into the correct gap but when the students go to check answers all that comes up is green for correct and red for incorrect. if it is wrong why doesnt my answer get displayed?

That's the usual way it works.
If you use a workbook, you can add a button "Show answers" for the student to check wrong answers after they finish the exercise.
