5 Amazing facts about Women in Sports

1. Although women were technically permitted to participate in many sports, relatively few did until the late 19th century, when women's sport history is considered to start. Back then, although horseback riding, archery, golf, tennis, skiing and skating were practiced among women in the upper social class, there was often disapproval of women who played sport.

2. The first Olympic games in the modern era, in 1896, were not open to women. The first time for female athletes to participate in the Olympic games was in 1900. Only 12 female athletes participated out of the 1066 athletes from 19 countries. They competed in only golf and tennis. In the 3rd St. Louis Olympics, archery was the only women's event. In the 4th London Olympics, archery, figure skating and tennis became women's events, and diving, swimming and tennis in the 5th Stockholm Olympics.

 3. There are a few sports where men and women compete together: in mixed events or in truly mixed sports. Sports that operate in mixed events are badminton, luge, tennis and ice skating. In badminton, men and women compete as a male/female duo; in luge they compete by teams with equal numbers of men and women; in tennis, men and women compete as a male/female team in mixed doubles matches; and in ice skating male/female pairs compete together performing a dance on the ice.

 4. Sports where men and women compete against each other regardless of sex, as the physical differences between them are considered to not have any effect on the outcome of the competition, are equestrian, in which the attributes required to win are just to be an able rider, and sailing, but only in one particular class, the Nacre 17.

 5. Women that have broken boundaries in sports! African American sprinter Wilma Rudolph was the first  woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympics. Despite the loss of strength in her left leg, caused by polio, she became the fastest woman in the world at the 1960 Olympics. Former World No. 1 Billie Jean King is regarded as one of the greatest women's tennis players of all time. She won 39 Grand Slam titles, including 12 in singles, 16 in women's doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles.

Problems at the airport

English

1) Read and translate the text.

At the airport, Maria walked towards the check-in desk attendant. She smiled and said, "May I see your ticket?" Maria handed over her ticket and passport. The attendant looked at them and asked, "Would you like a window seat or an aisle seat?" Maria thought for a moment and replied, "A window seat, please."

The attendant then said, "Could you place your bag on the luggage belt?" Maria put it on the belt. The scales weighed her bag and the attendant checked if it was within the baggage allowance. "Your bag is fine," said the attendant. "Please keep in mind not to carry any hazardous materials in your carry-on bag."

Maria thanked the attendant and took her boarding pass. She walked towards the departure lounge. Along the way, she passed several shops and cafes. She decided to buy a coffee and a magazine to read while she waited.

In the departure lounge, Maria found a comfortable seat near the big screen that showed flight information. She looked at her boarding pass and saw her flight number. The screen showed that her flight leaves at 10:30. She had some time to relax.

After a while, there was an announcement. "Attention, passengers on flight 5678 to New York. Please go to gate 5 for boarding." Maria stood up,took her suitcase and carry-on bag, and walked towards gate 5. She saw other passengers already in line at the counter.

Reading Test: Black Friday

English as a Foreign Language

The day after Thanksgiving has become America’s biggest shopping day. Closed all day on Thursday, shopping centres all across the nation open early on Friday. Some of them open at 12:01 Friday morning, while others open at 4 a.m. Some “sleepyhead“ shopping centres, like Target this year, don’t open their doors on Friday until 6 a.m. From Friday to the day before Christmas, this is the season when businesses make nearly 25 per cent of what they earn in a year. This season puts many businesses “in the black”, that is, they make the money they need for the year.

Reporters from local TV stations interview people who sleep in tents in front of the shops a day or two before the doors open on Friday. These people patiently wait in queue to get products that are 50 per cent cheaper or more.

“Oh, we have fun,” said one of the persons queuing. “We sometimes bring games to play, we watch TV and order lots of pizza, and we often meet interesting people. And, most important of all, we save a lot!” The problem, of course, is that only a very small number of products have big reductions in their prices. Apart from a few big discounts, each shop has other things that are reduced from 10 to 50 per cent, saving shoppers from $10 to $400 per item, and so Americans want to go shopping.

Not all Americans enjoy shopping. Reverend William Graham wants to change Black Friday’s name. “We want to call it Remember Jesus Friday. People should start the season with the right attitude. Christmas has become a Season of Shopping. We want to make it a Season of Giving. And we don’t mean giving material things. We mean giving your back, your mind, and your hands. Help an old lady clean up her house. Teach a kid how to read. Visit sick people in the hospital or in nursing homes. Give food to the Red Cross. Celebrate Christmas by remembering Jesus and forgetting Santa Claus.”
